I apologize if the email we sent last night felt off-putting in regards to Sahale's Covid and dog policies. The good news is that Northwest Permaculture has organized this gathering to create safety with the unknown. To respect the residents and create out time in the unregulated spaces where Covid doesn't have to be our focus. All our meeting spaces are open-air, outside or in breezy buildings where masks are optional. The only time vaccination status comes up is when picking volunteer duties, either in the kitchen (Sahales main food hub- vax only folx volunteer here) or at the rest of camp. I have been very diligent to setup our time so that we all can feel welcome and like full participants all weekend! I look forward to camping in the woods, visiting with you all and enjoying the wilderness of the hood canal. Thank you, Shaelee, president NWPC I am rather preoccupied with final bits and getting there, but feel free to email if you are concerned or have questions. Hello NW Permaculture Friends,
The Sahale Shindig starts tomorrow. There are still a few tickets left if you would like to join, register here , we will share digitally post-event and can include your permaculture projects! Email us if you'd have like to be a part. Arrivals begin at beautiful Sahale starting Friday Noon. Registration will be inside the big-top tent just past parking, which also houses the main schedule, our Permandala Project and FreeLand (gifting exchange tables). You can still add ideas/comments to our Schedule; feel free to print a blank one out here. This weekend we will collectively fill it in with sticky-notes on a large schedule on the main tent's wall. We plan to hear from Kitsap Harvest at 4pm, have dinner at 7pm, closing the evening with a circle of introductions and intentions in the Tea-Saloon. Please take pictures and notes, share on our discord and slack groups so our greater community that can't make it can still learn and play along with us. Directions to Sahale, and community join links are on the NWPCC website. What to Bring:
We are stoked to be crafting this weekend with you. Best, Team NWPCC Remember to bring things to share, like seeds, ideas, homegrown and handmade! Our team has created a basic structure, the schedule getting filled out as enthusiastic individuals join our meetings to share their stories. We are an all volunteer board and community collective, creating the event through the passions we have to offer, making space for you to do the same. Could be music. Could be mending clothes (bring something you have that needs mending - this is a real offer for a group activity!). Check out the schedule and offerings we expect so far. Are you coming and want to present? Use the comment function to add your session, or add it during the event! What are you excited about? Bring it! You are welcome to add your piece at our next meeting! Zoom meeting join info on the NWPCC website, usually 7-8pm PT. Next meetup is Oct 12th, a Tuesday. The NW Permaculture 2021 Questionnaire is another portal to speak your mind and shape the event. Covid Precautions: Sahale follows state mandates, and protects the health of its elder and at-risk residents through a diligent covid safety protocol. Our event will be totally outside or in open-air tent and open-wall spaces. Masks are required when passing through indoors, such as pickup up meals. While in the dining hall we must wear a mask, wash hands upon entering, get our meal and exit to eat outside, covered areas provided. Indoor bunk accommodations are for vaccinated folks in Sahale's group housing, unvaccinated folks seeking provided accommodations will be given a tent with a bed or other solo space, like a sunroom or have option to camp in the large outdoor tent. Hand washing and sanitizing stations will be abundant, with designated bathroom facilities for vaccinated and unvaccinated folks. Outside, masks and social distancing are encouraged as befits your own beliefs and comfort zones.

After the structured session, children are released to “recess” a self-guided time to explore activities (seed bomb making, art, play) until the next meal. These circles and activities are optional, and otherwise the care and tending of children is assumed to be in the hands of caregivers who brought them and moderated by spontaneous community engagement. What are their stories? What are the allies and assets we have to work with for creating a preferred future? Jan calls upon an expansive array of experience. Thousands of people have visited his suburban property in Eugene to see what suburbia can become but this series will go far beyond a single property. Northwest Permaculture Convergence 2021 is on! The Sahale Shindig !!! - October 15-17 in Tahuya WA. Open Space Format campout. Let us know on the NW Permaculture 2021 Sahale Shindig Questionnaire. Our schedule will be filled out with our collective offerings the first night of the event. Let's have a good time! Learn More Our Purpose NWPCC provides education on and through practice of Permaculture. This design system fosters a culture and economy for shared abundance of all beings within the boundaries of Planet Earth. What We DoWe host annual convergences, which are a blend of work party, conference and festival; an all-in-one experience crafted in collaboration with PNW-based hosts who want to partner with NWPCC. Convergences are diverse just like our PNW region; however, there common elements like intentional engagement with indigenous community, welcoming ceremony, shared meals, camping, live music, discussions, presentations and hands-on projects over an extended weekend. We ever-refine our design for peaceful and synergistic productivity that embodies the permaculture ethics of fair share, earth care, and people care to maximize cultural exchange, learning and friendship building. Ways to ParticipateThe NWPCC organizing team wishes to increase the number of gatherings we help facilitate across the PNW region in the coming years by encouraging self-led micro-convergences. These small gatherings would contribute to accessibility, relationship links, skill development, knowledge documentation, and awareness of what’s happening in our region.
Are you interested in hosting a micro-convergence? Do you have a skill to share and are open to teaching others? Do you have a project that would be great for a work party? Just in case you are wondering… micro-convergences would be an addition to regional offerings. The annual big convergence would still take place in the fall, and offer a large mosaic of Northwest Permaculture where we can celebrate and learn from each other. How You Can Help Message the board and our community through SLACK and Discord, or join in on one of our zoom meetups. Login information is at https://www.northwestpermaculture.org/ Hello Permaculture People, 2020 is in the soil, and our reflections are like mulch; helping us digest the inputs of the past season and transform them into good fruit for the future. We see that our convergence community has shifted, our direction pivoted, and our reach grown as society at large is looking for answers to sustainable design. Please share your thoughts on how Northwest Permaculture has impacted your life, and how we can best serve. Last fall we met digitally and encouraged people together as they could in little groups: Converge-in-place and connect online. It was beautiful to find that we had more meaningful facetime with each-other than years past. Teachers, organizers and people from all over, finding time to be more present with each other’s stories as we were spared running from classroom to classroom. Our 1-track schedule brought us together around one thought-train, and integrated chat to share ideas and connections deeply with a collaborative notespace. Our #Slack and Discord channels allowed us to have live spaces for conversations outside of the Zoom meeting that have carried over past the event, laying a framework to establish a confluence of permaculture systems as the new mainstream, dug with the tools of our ancestors and defined by the tools of today. In 2021 we will be carrying over the best of the convergence in microcosm every month. This flows energy toward finding partners in education and holding regular campfires with a zoom portal for regional connection. Sharing knowledge, crafting the future. We are looking for educators and activists lifting up sustainable systems. Do you know a teacher or admin at a junior college, highschool, youth center or the like we should be working with? So many great teachers pass through our doors, and skillshares taught on the fields. We are ready to document and share how the Northwest Community ticks. Please connect us to those doing the work in your area, and what schools have programs on sustainability. We can match those who want to learn and have the technological resources to record sessions to those who are designing systems that work, sharing methods to inspire best practices. Our role as the NWPCC is to link the nodes across our community and amplify the voices of sustainability practitioners.January 19, 2020 The Campfires Starting this winter, our team will be holding space around a big bright burning idea every month. We will have a speaker share their story around the digital campfire (like our Keynotes). later, we will hold space for a community discussion around the themes that emerged in that time and co-create a monthly Vlog. Starting late February, let us gather to discuss and grow. Submit your preferred time and topics here and email us if you'd like to share as a speaker during these discussions or have anyone to recommend. -> February’s topic is LOVE. We will be talking with community organizers involved in Anti-Racist work, and hold conversations around locally led reparations and social justice and practical love. Lets open up a suggestions forum on how we love each-other COMMUNITY VLOG: please write or send in a short <1 min on LOVE -> March's topic is SEED. We will be talking with Seed Advocates and hold conversations around the theme of play allyship (planthropocene) seed saving and our role in stewarding biodiversity. COMMUNITY VLOG: please write or send in a short <1 min on SEED -> April’s topic is TRUST. We will be talking with Land Access Specialists and hold conversations around the theme of community held spaces, land reparations, and food sovereignty. COMMUNITY VLOG: please write a few words or send in a short <1 min on STEWARDSHIP -> May’s topic is TRUTH and DECOLONIZATION. We will be talking with an activist doing the work to create a culture of honor for all people. In particular, for those who have a historically discriminated against and marginalized identity to be seen and heard. Also a space for those who are perpetuating this violence to honestly see their part and lean into healing for all. The goal is to hold a community container for conversations around decolonization in action, and to give examples of growing a healthy future based on honesty, respect and real reparations. COMMUNITY VLOG: Please write a few words or send in a short <1 min on DECOLONIZATION -> Potential Summer and on topics are Play, Soil, Pruning, Harvest, Preserve, Resilience, Rest and Growth. What do you want to talk about? Who should kick off the discussions? When is best? Happy to listen
I am grateful that one of the outcomes of this year is an increasing interest in resilience, and growing harmony between all people. The rifts and sickness that emerged beg us to change our patterns and adopt systems that honor rather than destroy. Let's keep doing it. Thank you for taking the time to read this and co-creating a future we want to harvest. With you, Shaelee on behalf of the NWPCC team ![]() i there guys, gals and non-binary pals! So stoked on our convergence this year. We are sharing permaculture ethics in action September 24-27 as we gather in solidarity to create the world we want to live in. Converge-in-Place & local friends can listen in with you! We hope to inspire many small groups to form this weekend, with each ticket-holder inviting a few local friends to join in during our time together. Please, ask friends and neighbors to share the space. Gather in your yard, in your home quarantine-bubble and let's get the whole northwest converging! Your $20 ticket is a portal to login to our gathering and all the presentations, tours and work-parties that entails, get downloadable content, chat with peers from around the region, and share your world right back! For the kiddos and caretakers, we have a dedicated space for youthful conversation with permanent links to the Permaculture Coloring Book and correlating youtube shorts + activities befitting each concept. Each page is representative of the design principles and ethics that are the heart of permaculture. Designed for Connections We will be streaming from across the region, one channel for all presentations, encouraging cross-pollination and building up our network. Workshops include farm tours that show how to merge education into a working farm plan, using draft horses, a how-to for Korean natural farming, scythe-lore, and tools to decolonize permaculture and create space for shared power and deep listening. On a global note, our Sunday keynote is someone who our very own board member, David Stein, met during his permaculture glob-trot sabbatical in India. Our team is jazzed to hear more about David’s trip, and learn from Prem’s story. Prem is very involved in his community, and travels to surrounding villages to share his farming methods. He has made his farm into a thriving educational site, in which students from all over the world come to learn. During meals we will be share food-based projects like making yogurt and sauerkraut, and how to harvest herbs and preserve in a number of ways. I'll be live-streaming from my garden, and hope you will to! We’d love the meal-time to be a place to make friends and share ideas. If you have a well-loved-practice you would like to share at this time, please record a <5minute “Permaculture Service Announcement” highlighting what its all about, and we will make space to share it. I’m stoked on the idea of us making krawt together while I do my demo, and in a few months following up in our online chat channels, Discord and Slack with feedback on our unique methods and how all our batches turned out! If we live close, perhaps it will be time for a campout and we can have a tasting party! Education, Courage and Vulnerability This year, we are intentionally digging into the heart of our core permaculture ethics of people-care, earth-care, fair-share: how does living out those values look in our lives? As a key part of this conversation, it's important to understand the interplay of earth-care and people-care; and we need to talk about what happens when we abandon these things. At times during the weekend, we may feel compelled to share personal stories and go deep together. While we want to respect people’s privacy, for the sake of listening deep and growing together, everything will be recorded. So if you would rather not be "on the record” please create your own anonymity through an avatar, and use chat and private message functions to build lasting relationships with people in community so we can grow in accountability and life together. Continuing the people-care aspect after the convergence-official is another mission, as such we hope to encourage local small groups to keep meeting. Think Permaculture-Potlucks, seed swaps, work-parties and emergent-design campout micro-conferences (we have a template for that! please ask! : ) Cultivate Community, converge-in-place. Let's use this great disturbance as a season of grace to replant the burning covid jungle out there as a food-forest garden designed for sharing, caring and kind stewardship. You inspire me, Shaelee (and the whole NWPCC team that approves this message!) NWPCC President Northwestpermaculture.org ps: A little video I made about my heart for the NWPCC and the convergence this year in particular during our planning, we are making a video that has the voices of all us organizers together, but here is a sneak peak of my thoughts: NWPCC_heart-to-heart_Shaelee.mp4. ![]() See you soon! Hello Friends! I hope the influence of permaculture principles in your lives has made this wild year feel like an opportunity for much positive change! In that spirit, we see “the problem is the solution” as a way to live out our 2020 theme Cultivate Community better that we could have ever dreamed of last fall. Cultivate CommunityWe are happy to say, the convergence is still on for September! We’re stoked for the opportunity to highlight good work from across Cascadia, with a digital piece allowing us to spread ideas for sustainable culture beyond our borders. Rather than clustering hundreds of people in one spot, we invite you all to host workshops and small gatherings within your “quarantine bubble” community, while we share all our offerings and stay connected online. In that spirit, we invite those from similar ecologies like parts of Chile, Western Europe, South Africa, Tazmania, and elsewhere in America to participate. Cultivate connections! Our keynotes and opening/closing circles will be the big zoom parties- where we all gather “face to face” and pass around the speaker microphone to workshop leads and elders in our community. The rest of the time, we encourage you to think about what kind of workshop you could offer. Would it be a farm tour? Teaching on your passion? Perhaps you want to share how korean natural farming works, how to build and sharpen a scythe, explain tools to activate social permaculture systems or make a wild sauerkraut from late season harvests. So many good ideas are under our umbrella, and I know you have some amazing special knowledge or a story that could be an inspiration to a world that needs some hope. We’re in this together! Stretch the BenefitWe envision musicians and artists helping us through the night with a sound lab of permaculture bands, playlists and suggested podcasts to explore. Our children's program offers a downloadable coloring book explaining the design principles and ethics, with linked videos explaining the principles fun DIY projects to explore anytime. Our unique format allows us to stretch the bounds of our normal 9am to 9pm weekend format and potentially carry on the messages past the convergence through recorded sessions for post-posting on our website. Please submit what you’d like to share. Inclusive by DesignWe are happy to present a super low $20 ticket price for 2020, have scholarships available, and offer all our presenters a platform to promote their projects and get direct donations from participants. This convergence is an amazing chance to share what works with each-other and explore the new mainstream flowing with Fair-Share, Earth-Care and People-Care. Let's do it! Permaculturally Inspired, Shaelee President Northwest Permaculture Convergence |
As we send out newsletters we will post them here on the website and any other announcements.
